Jens Merten achieved his studies at Technical University in Munich, including a one-year diploma thesis at Ecole Polytechnique in France, and then got his PhD on amorphous silicon solar modules at Barcelona University in 1996. He then headed the R&D department at Trama TecnoAmbiental in Barcelona with the setting up and coordination of several EU funded projects dealing with PV systems. From 2002 on, he coordinated a €4 million rural electrification project of 18 islands of Kiribati with a total of 1,800 solar systems. He joined CEA-INES in 2005 as the Head of the Laboratory for Solar Systems, where he further developed advanced cell and module characterization methods. Since 2012, he is Programme Manager in the Board of Directors of INES. He is scientific committee member of several conferences.
